A. Y. Jackson Park

A. Y. Jackson, a prominent member of the famous 'Group of Seven', lived in Manotick from 1957 to 1962. His art was inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of Canada, and is featured in the National Gallery of Canada.

The Manotick Art Association championed the naming of A. Y. Jackson Park in his honour, in a riverside setting where many people can go to paint, draw or photograph the picturesque Watson's Mill on the opposite bank.. When completed, the park will include perennials, wildflowers, trees and a gazebo.

A. Y. Jackson Park sod turning ceremony was held November 6, 2002 by the Manotick A. Y. Jackson Park Committee and Mayor Chiarelli of the City of Ottawa.

From the Press Release:

Phase One if for the construction of pathways, landscaping and a memorial garden. The remainder of the work will be completed in Phases Two and Three by 2004.

The new park, located across the Rideau River from Watson's Mill, is the result of collaboration by the City of Ottawa, the Ottawa Stewardship Council, and the Friends of A. Y. Jackson Park, a committee made up of local residents. The theme of the park is to raise awareness that A. Y. Jackson lived and painted in Manotick from 1957 to 1962. A number of very large stones have been specially selected and brought to the site to form a memorial garden where visitors can read about the life and times of the famous Canadian painter. The park will also promote local history and nature interpretation.
